Documents Needed After an Express Entry ITA

If you have just received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) through Express Entry, congratulations. The clock has also started. You have 60 calendar days to submit a complete electronic application for permanent residence, and IRCC will not extend that deadline for you. The documents you need depend on your profile, but they usually include your passport, language results, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), proof of work experience, proof of funds, police certificates, an immigration medical exam and civil documents such as birth and marriage certificates. This guide explains each one in plain language, shows a simple 60-day plan, and points out the problems we see most often with applicants from Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Gujarat. The checklist applies to anyone, but the India-specific tips should save you time. The 60-Day Rule: Why Timing Matters IRCC’s own guidance states that applicants must submit a complete application within 60 days of receiving the ITA. You can read the official wording in IRCC’s Express Entry completeness check guidance. If you miss the deadline, the invitation expires and you have to re-enter the pool and hope to be invited again. A complete application means every document on your personal checklist is uploaded. The system builds that checklist from the answers in your profile, so two candidates can see different lists. Do not copy someone else’s list. Follow the one in your own IRCC account. The documents that cause the most delays are police certificates and, to a lesser extent, medical exam results, because they depend on outside offices. Start them in the first week. The Documents at a Glance Document Who needs it Usual timing Passport and photos Everyone Ready immediately Language test results Principal applicant (and spouse if points are claimed) Must be valid when you apply ECA report If you claim points for foreign education Must be valid when you apply Work experience letters Anyone claiming work points Can take weeks to collect Proof of funds Most applicants not already working in Canada Gather early Police certificates Every adult, for places lived long enough Often the slowest Immigration medical exam Every applicant and family member Book in week one Civil documents As they apply to you Check for name mismatches Now, each item in more detail. 1. Passport and Identity Documents Upload clear colour scans of the bio page and every page with stamps or visas. Check that your passport is valid for a reasonable period, since a passport that expires soon can cause problems later in the process. Make sure the spelling of your name matches the profile you submitted. If you have changed your name, add proof, such as a marriage certificate, a gazette notification or a court order. For many families from Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat, surname variations such as Singh, Kaur, Patel or Sharma, or the use of a father’s or husband’s name, can differ across documents. Fix these now rather than explaining them later. 2. Language Test Results The language results in your profile must still be valid when you submit the application. For most candidates from India this means an IELTS General Training result, though CELPIP is also accepted. Language results are valid for two years from the test date, so if your results were close to expiring when you entered the pool, check the date again as soon as you receive the ITA. An expired result can lead to a refusal, because your points can no longer be confirmed. Upload the full test report form, not a screenshot of the score. 3. Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) If you claim points for education completed outside Canada, you need an ECA from an organization designated by IRCC. A common choice is World Education Services (WES). The report must match the degrees you claimed in your profile, including the level of education and the field of study. ECA reports are valid for five years from the issue date. Also gather your degree certificates and transcripts. If a document is in Hindi, Punjabi or Gujarati, you will need a certified English translation. 4. Work Experience Letters (Reference Letters) This is where many Indian applicants struggle. IRCC needs proof of the work experience you claimed, and it is usually shown with a letter from each employer. A strong letter is on company letterhead, signed by a manager or HR representative with contact details, and states: If an employer is slow to respond, or a company has closed, collect supporting documents such as appointment letters, salary slips, Form 16, bank statements and tax records. They help show the experience was real, but they do not always replace a proper letter, so ask early. Make sure the job titles and duties match what you wrote in your Express Entry profile. For related planning, see our guide on how to increase your Express Entry CRS score, since the points you claimed for work experience must be backed by these letters. 5. Proof of Funds Most candidates need to show they can support themselves and their family when they arrive. The required amount depends on your family size and is updated by IRCC from time to time, so always check the current figure before you gather statements. Some candidates may not need proof of funds, such as those already authorized to work in Canada with a valid job offer, but your checklist will tell you what applies to you. Proof of funds is usually shown with official letters from your bank on the bank’s letterhead. They should state your account details, the date the account was opened, the average balance for the last six months, and the current balance. The money must be available to you, and gifts or borrowed funds need to be clearly explained. For a deeper breakdown, read our guide on how much money you need for Canada PR. One caution: sudden large deposits shortly before applying can raise questions. If funds came from a property sale, a family gift or a business payout, keep the
